Chapin family papers and business records, 1822-1932.

Correspondence, legal and financial papers and records of a New Hartford, Connecticut, family and manufacturers of wooden planes and rulers. Some materials have been arranged by individual and some by company name, but there is a great deal of overlap between personal and business, and there could be materials in either or both places. Herman Chapin is represented by justice of the peace documents and financial records. Edward M. Chapin, Herman's son, is represented by correspondence and financial records, and the administrative records of Olive Pike's estate. The companies included in the collection are H. Chapin & Sons, H. Chapin's Sons, H. Chapin's Son, Chapin Machine Company (which made knitting machines and other machinery, and of which Philip E. Chapin was proprietor), Chapin Manufacturing Company, and Chapin-Stephens Company. Some of the "historical records" regarding the Chapin companies are photocopies; the location of the originals is unknown.
